No fewer than 13 passengers perish and 98 injured in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's major government projects.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” stated the country's president.

The official reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The building of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its duties in national infrastructure. They were built at an rapid speed, surpassing predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled ongoing questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "demands swift accountability."

In reply, the president insisted that the train had been operating in total accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and management of these strategic initiatives.
