The Black Phone
Scott Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller holds up well even without a continuation. Set in 1978 Denver, a series of kidnappings has made the local kids anxious. Once Finney is taken by the villain and held captive in a basement, he dreads the worst. However, the old telephone on the wall continues to ring, with eerie communicators giving advice, and the prophetic visions from his sibling Gwen may be his salvation. An effective horror. This Saturday, nighttime, the Film4 channel
The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the battle between faith and wealth, it's a knockout win for greed in Showalter's wonderfully garish true story of the disgraced TV preacher and her criminal husband. The actor plays the venal Jim, who proclaims early on, claiming divine approval for wealth. The couple begin profiting from the people's Christian beliefs. It's a riot of tacky decor, overdone appearance and hypocrisy, though the lead actress succeeds to show Tammy Faye with compassion. Next Tuesday, 1.15am, the Film4 channel

This week's additional entry from the filmmaker is a intelligence thriller as tight as the polo necks worn by the actor's UK spy.
